xDSL & Fibre Optic modems for high-speed
data transfer on copper or fibre
Brochure
Versatile broadband transmission technology.
The
AM-2048 family of broadband data network transmission products
has been designed to deliver full 2Mbps, fractional 2Mbps or n x
64kbps services over repeaterless local copper loop cables or optical
fibre. Cutting edge fibre transmission technology and comprehensive
digital Subscriber Line (xDSL) features have been integrated into
single versatile platform. Remote powering of NTUs allows flexible
deployment of data services to all areas, thereby extending the
networks' reach. Inbuilt state of the art SNMP management facilities
provide Network Operators with a powerful and versatile solution
platform for high-speed data services. With a choice of DSL line
codes, a solution can be tailored to meet the specific demands of
the operators network.
The AM-2048 family of copper and fibre
optic modems may be employed to drive data between LAN's, PBX's,
high-speed multiplexers, X.25 nodes or routers and peripheral devices.
In fact between any two locations that require high-speed data transfer.
By means of the external clocking facility, it is possible to tail
end Digital Data Network (DDN) or Primary Rate ISDN (PRI) Services
from a local exchange to the customers' premises.
Copper Transmission
Full duplex rate adaptive transmission is provided over 2-wire unconditioned
twisted pair circuits up to a data rate of 2Mbps. One or two pairs
can be used to deliver the full 2Mbps or nx64kbps. The transmission
system is implemented on customized ASICs using advanced digital
signal processing techniques and 2B1Q, CAP or G.SHDSL line codes.
The range of operation depends on the cable gauge, line code used
and the noise present on the line. Typical figures for AM-2048
are given in the table below for both maximum noise free range and
noise limited performance for the most commonly used transmission
rates.
This range performance can be achieved
over any mix of cable gauges normally encountered in the local telephone
network.
A feature of the AM-2048 Family xDSL transmission
systems, is the ability to work either point to point at nx64kbps
or 2.'048Mbps, or point to multi-point (see diagram) delivering
up to 960kbps of customer data to two remote sites. The modems always
operate in a user defined Master - Exchange Line Unit (ELU) to Slave
- Network Terminating Unit (NTU) relationship. Included in the line
signal structure is a communications channel. This enables both
ends of a circuit to be configured from the Master Modem. The communications
channel is also used to report remote alarms and set control loops
for test purposes.
Fibre Transmission
Full duplex transmission is provided by AM-2048 over a single optical
fibre. Some modems still use two optical fibres. One to transmit,
and one to receive data. Dataplex's approach to this new technology
effectively doubles the capacity of installed fibre optic cable
runs. Versions are available that have been optimized for single
mode or multi mode optical fibre. Range performance estimates are
given for both fibre types based on typical fibre attenuations.
The use of modular interfaces common to both the AM-2048 xDSL and
fibre modems reduces the need for extensive stock holding.
An extension of this fibre technology has been produced allowing
transmission of four E 1 or X.21 data channels over a single fibre.
Advanced Features
A number of advanced features have been incorporated into the AM-2048
Family software. These ensure that Network Operators have fully
flexible system control, management and test features. This enables
easier maintenance and improvement of Quality of Service (QoS) levels
to subscribers.
Sophisticated software simplifies commissioning
and reduces installation time. System software identifies local
and remote interfaces fitted and G.703 port usage. Software upgrades
(and line code programs) can be easily downloaded via direct PC
connection or over the communications channel from an ELU to remote
NTU. Comprehensive QoS tools are provided for monitoring link performance
according to the m.2100 standard to allow for proactive troubleshooting
on high priority links. Timeslot prioritization in point to point
mode, timeslot mapping in point to multi-point and a time and date
stamped alarm logbook are further powerful tools available to the
Operator or Network Manager.
SNMP features have also been designed into
AM-2048-Rack, standalone and rackmount system software. Links can
be managed right down to the standalone modem from the Network Element
in a AM-2048 Rack. SNMP Network Element modules compatible with
the AM-2048 Rack will allow seamless integration into existing
Network Management Systems. In addition the Access Network Management
Platform (ANMP) - a full-featured GUI SNMP Network Manager can be
used to take advantage of the complete range of built in features
and physical views.
SNMP Management of AM-2048 links and networks
is possible using standard SNMP MIB browsers, by integration of
Dataplex MIBs into SNMP management software or via use of ANMP -
Dataplex's own SNMP GUI Network Manager. An SNMP enabled Ethernet
Network Element is required in the AM-2048 Rack for this feature
to be accessed.
e-PIM
The addition of the e-PIM to the range of interface options for
the AM-2048 brings versatile IP connectivity to the Family. Dataplex's
e-PIM module with its Ethernet and USB interface ports allows extremely
cost effective LAN-to-LAN bridging applications to be implemented.
Ethernet 10/100 Base T is implemented according to the IEEE802.2
and 802.3 standards. The e-PIM module can be programmed as abridge
or as a router, with support of IP Protocols and NAT. The e-PIM
interface is available in both rackmount and standalone modem versions.
Use of AM-2048 and the e-PIM module, with
its powerful integrated bridging and routing capabilities removes
the need for a separate and expensive bridge or router in LAN-to-LAN
connection applications. E-PIM parameters can be accessed and the
module managed via a Telnet session, once it has been configured
and is connected to the LAN.
AM-2048 Family
The AM-2048 xDSL system operates as standard over one fibre or
one or two copper pair for point-to-point or two pairs for point
to multi-point applications. The DSL line code is factory programmed
but can be upgraded or changed via SW download. Two options are
currently available: 2B 1 Q & CAP; with G.SHDSL in development.
Both Standalone Desk Top units and Card versions for use in a High
Density Shelf Unit are available as detailed in the table below.
Standalone Units
The Standalone Unit (AM-2048A) is housed in a professionally styled
ABS high impact plastic enclosure. An inner metallised coating ensures
compliance with EMC directives.
A number of front panel controls and indicators
are provided. LED's indicate status of Urgent and non-Urgent Alarms,
Power and Test Mode. In addition push buttons allow for Master/Slave
configuration and loop setting for ease of commissioning. AM-2048MKII
presents a number of extra LEDs for status and fault identification.
The Data Interface is provided on a plug
in module at the rear of the unit. A range of industry standard
data interfaces, including G.703 and a bridging or routing Ethernet
module for 10/100 Base T are available. The G .703 interface is
provided on a dual impedance 75 or 120ohm module.
DSL Line connections for up to 2 pairs are
provided via an RJ45 sockets and associated line cord. Country specific
line cords are available. Fibre connections are made via FC/SPC
or ST connectors as standard. Other types may be specified as options.
AC and DC powered versions are available.
DC Power, -48V input, is connected via a Molex socket. An in line
mains power supply with country specific mains cord and plug can
also be supplied. The latest version of AM-2048MKII now provides
an integrated wide-ranging main PSU connection for a compact desktop
solution.
A 9-way D-type Controller Port is provided
on each unit. This allows a VT100 terminal, terminal emulator or
PC to be connected to an RS232 Serial Com Port for full control
of the unit. The large screen display on a PC or terminal allows
for ease of configuration and control.
Alternatively the ANMP (Access Network Management
Platform) can be used. Modems can be configured, test loops set,
status displayed and link performance monitored when used in conjunction
with AM-2048 Racks and cards. This software can be used to manage
point to point standalone links, or for larger networks including
standalone or rackmount modems.
AM-2048 Rack

The AM-2048 Family rack mounted cards (AM-2048B)
can be housed in a 19" High- Density Rack Mounting Shelf. This
shelf is designed to hold up to a maximum of 12 AM-2048 modems.
The shelf has optional dual feed -48V DC or AC Mains power supply
versions. A Network Element for Management purposes is also provided
as standard. The Network Element provides two connections. The first
is the local serial RS232 Controller port for connection to a PC
or VT 100 terminal. The second is the Ethernet port for full Remote
SNMP network management when the SNMP Management option is taken
for the AM-2048 Rack.
A version of this shelf is also available
for use with both AM-2048 rackmount cards and the rackmount version
of OM4x2. This special shelf version (OM4x2 Rack) has an extended
backplane to allow extra interfaces to be terminated. All card versions
are functionally equivalent to Standalone Units, and consist of
a double eurocard size p.c.b with a metal front panel.
Front Panel Indicators are provided for
Urgent and Non-urgent alarms, Test Mode and Power. The AM-2048
Family cards may be mixed in any combination of copper and fibre
optic versions in the same shelf, and with any combination of industry
standard interface types. In point to multi-point applications the
chassis can be used to drive up to 1 Mbps of data to up to 24 remote
customers, providing a high density of customer NTU support from
a single chassis.
The DSL line connections to each card are
via an RJ45 front panel socket. For optical safety, fibre optic
cable connections are on the card itself, exiting via a cut out
on the front panel. The card is therefore removed and powered down
in order to change the optical cable. Similarly for all cards, data
terminations are made via a front panel mounted connector. Card
versions (AM-2048B-MR) compatible with AM-2048A are also available
for Dataplex's AM-Rack and AM-Managed Rack high-density modem
shelves.
Cable Management
An optional low cost cable management bracket is also available.
This is a simple 1 VU high rack-mounting bracket to aid in the cable
management of optical fibre line, DSL line and data cabling. A simple
clip approach to restraining cables means they are firmly held,
but can be re-routed and moved quickly without recourse to using
tools.
